Epitaph for my hometown, which kept Carson McCullers a secret from me

Amy Bagwell

it would be a generalization

to say the air in Columbus

was like the air in an elevator

you entered in August with

eleven strangers a bucket

of chicken and nothing to drink

and now it is September but

it wouldn’t be an exaggeration

My poems are recently in storySouth, where is the river, Terminus Magazine, and Vallum: Contemporary Poetry. I co-direct Wall Poems, a poetry mural project, and Goodyear Arts, an artists' residency project, and teach English in Charlotte, NC.
