Sneaker Waves

Here at this beach that slowly slants

away from the security of rock and tree—

then, under cover of water, gives out

suddenly like an anchor—the ocean can seem

harmless, even soothing, predictably caressing

the shore, lulling with its leisurely lapping.

Do not be fooled say the locals Do not be fooled.

Even violent men can appear tender for a time.
