The Permafrost

No, it didn't melt.

When it does, it will

have lost its name

and will be something else.

Bog, farmland, don't know

yet, just not this hoar

reflecting up into your eyes

like jewels ground down.

Still please, feel free to continue

your intricate studies. The scrape

of your tools in my long

white back, my fear,

your hammer, my hands

clenching deep underground.

Nick Admussen is the author of five chapbooks of poetry, including Watching Lumia from Winged City Press, Neither Nearing Nor Departing from Two of Cups Press, and the forthcoming Stand Back, Don't Fear the Change.
